World Language
All students begin as novice learners of a new language; teachers advance the learning as developmentally appropriate. Student Achievement Standards and Student Objectives are organized by proficiency levels: novice, beginner, intermediate, advanced, and high school. All students begin as novice learners of a new language; teachers can advance the learning as developmentally appropriate.
This allows for differentiating of instruction to accommodate learners who speak the language at home and those learners with no experience of the language.
The world language achievement standards are separated into strands: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.
Communication
Students will engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and exchange opinions.
Students will understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics. Students will present information, concepts and ideas to listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Cultures
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the traditions, products and perspectives of the cultures studied.
Communities
Students will use the world language both within and beyond the school setting for personal enjoyment, enrichment and active participation.
Connections
Students will reinforce and expand their knowledge of other areas of study through the world language. Students will acquire and use information from a variety of sources only available in the world language, using technology, print, audiovisual, media, data and human resources.
Comparisons
Students will demonstrate an understanding of nature of language through comparisons of that world language and their own.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
